Organic coconut oil is one of the main ingredients in our world-renowned soaps and lends them their rich cleansing lather. We also source culinary food-grade organic coconut oil for our premium White and Whole Kernel Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO).
In addition to our Serendipol project in Sri Lanka, our Fair Trade cosmetic-grade organic coconut oil comes from the beautiful coast of Kenya near Mombasa. Founded by a U.S.-based charity, the project is now operated by Dr. Bronner’s sister company SerendiKenya. Our staff has so far recruited an estimated 1,000 smallholder coconut farmers and helped them convert to organic practices. At the same time, production has been modernized and expanded. In addition to providing oil for Dr. Bronner’s soaps, SerendiKenya also supplies the growing domestic market in Kenya for food-grade coconut oil.
The project has already become an important local employer – providing good wages and working conditions uncommon in other agricultural industries. Through price premiums and prompt payments, the project also supports renewed interest among coconut farmers – who in the past could not find well-paying customers for their coconuts – in improving their lands.
